Honor the LORD with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your produce; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will be bursting with wine.(Proverbs 3:9-10 ESV)
Giving money is not the only way to show honour, but it is one way.The word translated honour means to value. Honouring someone is a way of showing them, and others, that they are valuable to you.
Scripture connects giving of money with honour. Specifically included are God, your parents, those who preach or teach the
Word of God, and widows.
For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ But you say, ‘If anyone tells his father or his mother, “What you would have gained from me is given to God,” he need not honour his father.’ So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God.(Matthew 15:4-6 ESV)
The elders who are good leaders should be considered worthy of an ample honorarium, especially those who work hard at preaching and teaching. For the Scripture says: You must not muzzle an ox that is threshing grain, and, The labourer is worthy of his wages.(1 Timothy 5:17-18 HCSB)
The double honour spoken of in verse 17 for those whose work is
bringing us insight from God’s Word is clearly financial support, as verse 18 explains. The NLT translation makes this clear.
Support widows who are genuinely widows. But if any widow has children or grandchildren, they should learn to practice their religion toward their own family first and to repay their parents, for this pleases God.(1 Timothy 5:3-4 HCSB)
Pay your obligations to everyone: taxes to those you owe taxes, tolls to those you owe tolls, respect to those you owe respect, and honour to those you owe honour.(Romans 13:7 HCSB)
CONFESS THIS: I will give honour to whom honour is due.
