Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God.(Luke 8:11 RSV)
And he said, “The kingdom of God is as if a man should scatter seed upon the ground (Mark 4:26 RSV). To help us understand how God’s Word and His kingdom operate, Jesus used a seed. And normally, for a seed to grow and produce a harvest takes significant time. However, it is also clear that God can speed up natural processes.
Here are three examples from Scripture: Aaron’s rod that grew almonds overnight, a plant that grew overnight which shaded Jonah, and the boat immediately reaching the shore when Jesus got aboard.
And Moses deposited the rods before the Lord in the tent of the testimony. And on the morrow Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi had sprouted and put forth buds, and produced blossoms, and it bore ripe almonds.(Numbers 17:7-8 RSV)
The book of Jonah tells of a plant that grew large enough overnight to be able to shade Jonah from the sun.
Then Jonah went out of the city and sat to the east of the city, and made a booth for himself there. He sat under it in the shade, till he should see what would become of the city.
And the Lord God appointed a plant, and made it come up over Jonah, that it might be a shade over his head, to save him from his discomfort. So Jonah was exceedingly glad because of the plant. But when dawn came up the next day, God appointed a worm which attacked the plant, so that it withered.
When the sun rose, God appointed a sultry east wind, and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah so that he was faint; and he asked that he might die, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”
But God said to Jonah, “Do you do well to be angry for the plant?” And he said, “I do well to be angry, angry enough to die.”
And the Lord said, “You pity the plant, for which you did not labor, nor did you make it grow, which came into being in a night, and perished in a night.
And should not I pity Nin’eveh, that great city, in which there are more than a hundred and twenty thousand persons who do not know their right hand from their left, and also much cattle?”(Jonah 4:5-11 RSV)
One time Jesus’ disciples were in the middle of the lake rowing in a storm. As soon as Jesus entered the boat, they were immediately at land, which was about 4 miles away (a little over 6 kilometres).
When they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat. They were frightened, but he said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” Then they were glad to take him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going (John 6:19-21 RSV).
God is gracious and merciful. So while understanding the seed idea is important, it need not severely limit us when God is involved.–A Devotion
For example: healing is a natural process God created so the human body will heal. However, we can pray for God’s power to cause the process to speed up so that healing occurs faster than normal.
